In this guide, we explain what an EDC knife is, what its characteristics are, and how a folding knife differs from a fixed blade model. EDC knife — what is it and what are its features?

An EDC knife (short for Everyday Carry) is a model designed for everyday use. It is a compact, multifunctional tool that should be practical enough to be used and carried with you every day – in your pocket, on your belt, or in a tactical waist bag. Features that distinguish a good EDC knife:

• Compact size – an EDC knife should be small enough to fit in your pants pocket, belt, or pouch. It is not a large model for heavy work. 
• Safety of use – a solid blade locking mechanism (liner lock, frame lock, or back lock) that prevents accidental closure during use. 
• Versatility – a good EDC knife will work well for everyday tasks such as cutting packaging, preparing meals, minor repairs, or cutting ropes and materials. It is a universal tool that comes in handy in many situations. 
• Discretion – a knife for everyday carry should not attract unnecessary attention. For this reason, folding knives (folders) are often chosen, as they can be easily and discreetly carried in a pocket.

• They require maintenance – the hinges and locking mechanism must be cleaned and lubricated regularly to keep the knife in full working order.

Advantages of EDC fixed blade knives: 

• Maximum durability – no moving parts means greater durability and reliability. 
• Easier maintenance – simple design makes cleaning easier.
• Better for tasks requiring greater force – ideal for batoning (splitting wood), prying, or other jobs requiring a solid and durable construction (however, this is not necessary for everyday use). 

Disadvantages of EDC fixed blade knives: 

• Larger size – a fixed blade knife cannot be tucked into a pocket or small pouch; it must be stored in a suitable sheath or holster on a belt. 
• Less discreet – more visible and may cause concern in public spaces.

D2 Orix folding knife – Green

Badger Outdoor D2 Orix is a knife that is perfect for everyday carry. Its great advantage is its low weight of only 126 grams. It fits easily in a pocket or small bag, and thanks to its sturdy, spring-loaded clip, it can be attached to a belt or the edge of a pants pocket.

A key element of the design is the blade made of high-quality D2 tool steel, which is highly resistant to dulling. The back of the blade features jimping, which provides stable thumb support and increases control over the knife during precise cuts.

The handle of this folding EDC knife has been ergonomically designed and equipped with green scales made of G10 laminate – a material known for its exceptional durability. The textured surface of the scales prevents slipping and guarantees a secure, safe grip. It is also worth mentioning that the knife blade can be opened with one hand using a flipper or thumb hole. Once opened, the blade is locked with a Liner Lock mechanism, which is durable and easy to use.

D2 Lobo folding knife – Black

Badger Outdoor D2 Lobo is another great choice for everyday use. The model features a Spear Point blade made of durable D2 tool steel. The knife weighs only 133 grams, making it almost as light as its predecessor. A distinctive feature of this model is the sandblasted steel finish, which gives the blade a matte appearance and reduces light reflections.

Similar to the Orix model, this model features jimping on the back of the blade, which serves as an additional safety feature. It provides a secure thumb rest and increases cutting precision, which is particularly useful for more demanding tasks.

The last product from our list is the Badger Outdoor D2 Gecko, the lightest model weighing only 123 grams. Its blade is made of durable D2 tool steel, which keeps its sharpness even with intensive use. A distinctive feature of this knife is the flat grind of the blade, which ensures precise cutting.
