Badger Outdoor survival equipment – create a set for emergency situations

Preparing for emergencies is an investment in peace of mind and safety. Natural disasters, infrastructure failures, terrorist attacks, and armed conflicts can occur quickly and unexpectedly, so it is worth putting together a survival set in advance to provide you with the basic means of survival in an emergency. With the right equipment, it will be easier for you to react and protect yourself and your loved ones.

In this guide, we explain what survival equipment is, what it is used for, and how to put together the right set. We also present proven products from the Badger Outdoor range that are worth adding to your set.

What is survival equipment and what is it used for?

By definition, survival equipment is a special set of tools and various equipment that help you survive in difficult conditions. It is useful not only during organized survival expeditions, but also in emergency situations, for example, when you need to quickly leave your place of residence due to a threat. Such a set can contain various items – from multifunctional tools, water purification filters, and first aid kits, to accommodation accessories and navigation devices.

With the right survival tools, you can obtain drinkable water and food, start a fire, build shelter, and find the right path. Such equipment not only increases your chances of survival but also gives you a sense of security and confidence that you are prepared for various challenges in the field. However, it is worth remembering that survival gear is only effective if we know how to use it properly.

How to put together a survival set?

A survival set may contain different items depending on the person preparing it. Some people may need additional medication for chronic conditions, some may include items to improve their mental well-being in crisis situations, while others may opt for protection against diseases specific to a given region. However, there are certain items that are worth having in every survival set, regardless of individual needs:

Below are some of our brand’s products that are worth including in a survival set. These include both essential items as well as those that are worth taking along as they will make it easier to function in the field.

Survival tools and multitools

A survival set should mainly include basic tools that will allow you to build a shelter in the field, for example. It is difficult to take a complete set of separate tools with you, and even more challenging to predict which ones will really be needed. That is why it is worth choosing a multitool, which combines up to a dozen functions in one tool.

As an example, we recommend Badger Outdoor Solid model, which has as many as 16 tools, including a knife, saw, cutting hook, and pliers with a replaceable wire cutter. It is very light, durable, and useful in the forest for building shelters, cutting branches, preparing materials for lighting fires, and many other tasks. This tool is also worth carrying around every day as part of your EDC – thanks to the clip, you can attach it, for example, to the edge of your pants pocket. Read our other guide, in which we explain what a multitool is and which Badger Outdoor model is worth choosing.

Although the multitool above has a knife function, it is also worth having a separate knife, as it usually offers a longer blade, a more comfortable grip, and greater precision for everyday tasks. One of the knives recommended in our range is D2 Toro folding knife, which is made of high-quality tool steel that is resistant to dulling and chipping. This model is equipped with a clip. The knife will come in handy for many tasks – cutting materials, preparing food, as a first aid tool, and many others.

In addition, it is worth equipping yourself with a small shovel, such as the US Army Military Grade Entrenching Tool, which will come in handy when preparing the ground for a tent or creating a fire pit. A folding chainsaw can also be useful, as its two-way cutting action allows you to quickly prepare firewood.

Shelter and fire-starting equipment

Rather than a traditional tent, it is worth adding a hammock with a tarp to your survival set. Why? Tents are usually larger, heavier, and take longer to set up. They require finding a suitable, level spot, protecting against water pouring in during rain, as well as dealing with sand and dirt being brought inside.

We recommend adding Tundra hammock to your survival set. It is lightweight yet very sturdy and can hold up to 200 kg. The fabric is not only light and breathable, but also resistant to moisture. Setting up the hammock takes only a few minutes, the whole process is simple and does not require any additional tools. Additionally, it is worth getting an X-Rain tarp, which will protect you from the sun, wind, and rain during the night. It can be attached using ropes, trekking poles, or other elements of the environment. A survival set should also include a sleeping bag, preferably one with a mummy design, such as the Badger Outdoor Nightpack 100R, as its shape retains heat better.

A survival set must also include a reliable source of fire. Don’t bother with regular matches or cheap lighters that won’t work in harsh conditions. Choose Fire Rod flint – it’ll help you start a fire even in snow, rain, and extremely low temperatures. Just one vigorous pull of the spark igniter on well-prepared kindling is all it takes.

Navigation and safety

In survival situations, you must not forget about tools for navigating the terrain, and that does not mean GPS, which can completely lose its signal in certain conditions. Traditional devices such as a compass and topographic map will always work – when moving through dense forest, in the mountains, or in places where there is often no satellite signal.

Consider equipping yourself with a Pointman map compass, which has fluorescent markings that allow you to use it after dark or in low light conditions. It is durable, so it will work well in harsh conditions. Also, take a map of your region with you. Remember to learn how to use these tools beforehand, as a compass and map are useless without basic knowledge of terrain orientation.

We also recommend taking lightsticks, which last up to 12 hours. Lightsticks are completely waterproof, which means they can be used even in the rain, in high humidity, and underwater. Lightsticks work well as a light source in difficult conditions. They can be used to mark your position, illuminate your campsite, or work with a map after dark without attracting the attention of bystanders.

Additional accessories

You can include many more useful items in your survival set that will simply make life easier in an emergency situation. For example, paracord, which is useful in the field for securing equipment, making temporary repairs, or as a rope for hanging a hammock or drying clothes.

It is also a good idea to pack a few items that will come in handy for cooking, so that you can prepare a hot meal while waiting for help to arrive. For example, take a Campings Stove FSCS small camping stove, which allows you to use various types of fuel, from dry wood to camping fuel in the form of tablets or gel. Also pack a 3Steelcook mess tin, which you can use to cook and eat your meal. It is also worth equipping yourself with a spork, a multifunctional tool that combines a knife, spoon, and fork.
