What is a multitool and which model should you choose? – overview from Badger Outdoor

In tactical and outdoor environments, a multitool is an integral part of the equipment of anyone who works or operates in difficult conditions. This multifunctional tool is useful in many situations – from epairing equipment, to preparing shelter, to minor technical work in the field. In outdoor conditions, it is indispensable when camping, cooking, and in emergency situations when a quick solution to a problem is needed without access to larger tools.
In this article, we explain what a multitool is, what its basic features are, and in which situations it works best. We also showcase Badger Outdoor multitool models, designed, among others, based on the practical knowledge and experience of former special forces operators.
What exactly is a multitool?
A multitool, also known as a multifunctional tool, is a compact device based on pliers, which additionally contains several or a dozen additional tools with many functions. The best multitools are usually made of stainless steel, which ensures their high durability and readiness for hard work. With a multitool, you can perform many tasks, such as:
- Repairing damaged equipment – tightening screws, prying and pulling out nails, compressing various materials;
- Cutting and sawing – ropes, paracord, firewood, bandages;
- Preparing meals – cutting, grabbing hot items with pliers, opening cans and drinks;
- Maintenance work – adjusting military, tactical, and travel equipment;
- Shelter construction – performing survival tasks;
- Securing and transporting – tying knots, holding objects, assembling or disassembling equipment;
- Personal safety – cutting seat belts, emergency door opening, cutting materials for improvised bandages;
- Rescue and signaling – preparing improvised signaling tools (e.g., mirrors, reflectors) or rescue aids (e.g., cutting ropes, hanging signaling materials).
And much more!
Basic tools in multitools – check them out!
Depending on the model, a multitool can have several to dozens of functions. Below is a list of tools that are most commonly found in a multitool:
- screwdrivers (Phillips, flat precision),
- knife (e.g., with a smooth blade),
- wire cutters,
- spring-loaded scissors,
- bottle and can opener,
- wire stripper,
- metal file,
- reamer with awl,
- wood saw,
- inch and metric ruler.
Multitool versus pocket knife — differences
It is also worth mentioning that a multitool and a pocket knife are not the same thing, although they are often treated as the same tool and their names are used interchangeably. A pocket knife is a small, handy tool in which the knife is the main function, and the other tools are additional. Is is usually light and easy to store in your pocket, but its capabilities are limited to simple tasks such as cutting packages or opening bottles. A multitool, unlike a pocket knife, is usually a more sophisticated tool based on pliers, which are better suited to more difficult tasks.
Where can multitools be used? Who are they intended for?
The versatility of multitools makes them useful in almost any situation, from everyday activities to expeditions in difficult terrain. Thanks to their compact form and variety of functions, they are a popular choice for both outdoor enthusiasts and professionals who need a reliable tool for their work. Here are the areas where multitools work best:
- Survival and bushcraft – useful for preparing wood for a fire, processing food, building simple shelters from sticks and ropes, and repairing equipment (e.g., tents, backpacks).
- Travel – useful for repairing travel equipment (e.g., adjusting trekking poles, repairing backpack zippers), cutting food on the go, opening cans and bottles.
- EDC (Everyday Carry) – helps with opening parcels and packages, cutting string or tape, thightening loose screws, trimming tags, or simple electronics repair;
- Household chores and DIY – great for assembling furniture, tightening screws and bolts, cutting cables, string or thin pipes, cutting tape and foil, as well as minor repairs to installations or household appliances.
- Uniformed services – useful for cutting ropes, tapes or belts (e.g. when evacuating people from vehciles), repairing equipment in the field (locks, rifles, backpacks, tents), opening food packages, assembling and disassembling equipment.
Badger Outdoor multitools — which model should you choose?
Here is an overview of several Badger Outdoor multitools. It does not cover our entire range. These are just examples of our products, without indicating which one is the best in terms of quality or functionality, as each one is different.
Thorn Black Multitool
The first tool on our list is Thorn Black multitool, distinguished by its black protective coating, which provides additional protection against corrosion and minimizes unwanted glare. We have equipped this device with 14 functions, including: pliers with a wire cutter, a reamer, a wire stripper, a knife, and a wood saw.
Both the framework and all the tools of this tool are made of high-quality 420J2 stainless steel, which has undergone precise heat treatment, thanks to which each element has achieved an optimal hardness of 45-48 HRC. This hardness makes the tools resistant to deformation and wear, the blades stay sharp for a long time, and the entire multitool remains durable even with intensive use in difficult conditions.
The multitool is equipped with Liner Locks for both the knife and the saw, which ensures the stability of the tools in the open position and increases safety during work. Thorn is perfect for survival, tactical operations, and home workshop use.

This model stands out because it has two blades: a 75 mm smooth blade and a 47 mm serrated blade designed for cutting ropes, seat belts, thick cords, and plastics. Both blades are made of 440 stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion.
The most distinctive feature of this model is that it has two glow-in-the-dark elements. Thanks to them, the multitool can be easily located in low light conditions. It will work well both for DIY projects at home, as an EDC tool, and in the field, on outdoor trips or in survival conditions.
